Ireland Unveiled an €8.5 Billion Budget for 2027 and Called It “Optimistic.” The Income Tax Credit Inside It Is Worth €125.

Finance Minister Simon Harris stood up in the Dáil shortly after 1pm on October 6 to present Budget 2027, calling it “an optimistic one for Ireland” that puts the country “on a path, a trajectory, a way forward.” The headline figure being reported for the overall package is around €8.5 billion; the personal income tax measures inside it come to €1.3 billion, built mainly from a €2,500 rise in the standard rate cut-off point, to €46,500, and €125 increases to the personal, employee and earned income tax credits.

A Year of Fuel Protests, Answered With €125 and a Tax Credit

The Budget arrives months after fuel protests broke out over the cost of diesel and petrol. Alongside the income tax package, the Government increased the state pension and reduced childcare costs, measures it frames as addressing the cost of living. Harris acknowledged the limits of what one Budget could do, saying the Government “could not achieve everything in one Budget” — a line that doubles as a fairly complete summary of the document itself.

The Headline Act, and Whoever Follows Him

Harris, who is also Fine Gael leader and deputy premier, delivered the first half of the speech. Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers, Fianna Fáil’s deputy leader, took the second half, announcing the spending side of the same coalition’s same Budget under the same optimistic branding. Between them, the two largest parties in government each got a turn describing the same €8.5 billion as proof the plan was working.

“A Path, a Trajectory, a Way Forward”

Pre-Budget leaks had already signalled that demands for extra spending, on housing and public services especially, would outlast whatever figure Harris landed on. He didn’t try to pretend otherwise: Budget 2027, in his own words, is a path and a trajectory rather than a destination. Which leaves open, for another year, the question of when the trajectory actually arrives somewhere.

Budget 2027’s official title, for what it’s worth, is just that: Budget 2027. Everything else — the path, the trajectory, the way forward — is a description, not a line item. The €125 tax credit, at least, is both.
