Britain’s Prime Minister Restored a Labour MP’s Party Membership in July. In September, She Called the Russian Threat a “NATO Fiction.”
Diane Abbott spent decades as one of the most recognizable figures in the Labour Party. In September she used her restored standing to tell the public that the Russian threat behind Britain’s growing defence budget is, in her words, a fiction invented by NATO to satisfy Donald Trump — and Prime Minister Andy Burnham now has to decide, again, what to do about her.

The MP Whose Whip Keeps Coming Back
Writing on X in early September, Abbott said the threat from Russia was “a NATO fiction” and that the planned increase in UK defence spending “should not go ahead.” She framed the higher budget as NATO’s way of satisfying Donald Trump’s demands rather than a response to any genuine danger — far from her first break with the party line on Russia: in 2022 she suggested the UK and US bore responsibility for any outbreak of war over Ukraine.
Abbott’s Labour whip had already been suspended once and restored in July by Chief Whip Anneliese Midgley — the same office now being asked, again, whether to take it away. A Home Office minister, Anna Turley, told the BBC any new suspension would be Midgley’s call, not the Prime Minister’s, even as commentators squarely blame Burnham for tolerating it.
A Government Raising Defence Spending Over the Very Threat Its Own MP Denies
Burnham’s government has committed to steadily rising defence spending, justified in large part by the assessed threat from Russia — the same threat Abbott calls invented. One editorial calling her views “ludicrous” argued a Prime Minister “cannot lead a party” containing an MP “detached from reality” on the country’s central security question, and said she should be expelled outright.
The Kremlin, for its part, has been happy to watch from the sidelines. Russian officials have said — according to independent reporting, not Russian state media — that they see “no hope” of warmer relations with London as long as Burnham is in Downing Street, which makes Abbott’s intervention land somewhere Moscow is only too glad to notice.
The Only Decision Burnham Hasn’t Had to Make Yet
For now, Abbott keeps her seat, her whip and her platform. Burnham has let his Chief Whip own the call on discipline while his government keeps building the defence budget Abbott says shouldn’t exist. Whatever he decides, it will be the second time in four months he has had to decide it.

LBC’s political team react to Abbott’s comments and what they mean for Burnham’s leadership.
A Prime Minister raising defence spending because of Russia, and a Labour MP insisting Russia is a NATO invention, can both carry a party card. For now, Burnham is letting them.
